Introduction to Thai Street Food
Street food is part of daily life in Thailand. People buy breakfast from a cart on the way to work, eat noodles at a stall for lunch and meet friends at a night market in the evening. For a visitor, it is one of the easiest ways to eat well and to see how local people live.
At a Bangkok night market, about 200-400 THB per person is enough to try several dishes.
Top Street Food Dishes You Must Try
Savoury classics
- Pad Thai (ผัดไทย): stir-fried rice noodles with egg, tofu, bean sprouts and a sweet-sour tamarind sauce, often with prawns.
- Som tam (ส้มตำ): green papaya salad from Isaan, the northeast. It is pounded in a mortar with lime, fish sauce, palm sugar and chilli, and it can be very hot.
- Gai yang (ไก่ย่าง): grilled chicken, usually eaten with som tam and sticky rice.
- Moo ping (หมูปิ้ง): grilled pork skewers, a common breakfast with a bag of sticky rice.
- Pad kra pao (ผัดกะเพรา): minced pork or chicken stir-fried with holy basil and chilli, served on rice, often with a fried egg on top.
- Khao pad (ข้าวผัด): fried rice with egg and your choice of meat or seafood.
Noodle soups
- Boat noodles (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือ): small bowls of rice noodles in a dark, rich broth. The bowls are small, so many people order two or three.
- Kuay teow (ก๋วยเตี๋ยว): the everyday noodle soup. You choose the noodle, the meat and a clear or spicy broth.
- Tom yum noodles: noodles in hot and sour tom yum soup. The traditional clear version is called tom yum nam sai. The creamy version, tom yum nam khon, is newer: it dates from the 1980s and is finished with evaporated milk or non-dairy creamer.
- Khao soi (ข้าวซอย): the curry noodle soup of northern Thailand, with soft egg noodles in the broth and crispy noodles on top. Look for it in Chiang Mai.
Sweets and drinks
- Mango sticky rice (ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วง): sweet sticky rice with coconut cream and fresh mango.
- Thai tea, cocoa and fruit juices: sweet, cold drinks.
