Floating Market Meals Near Bangkok
At a floating market, vendors sell food from boats on the canal.
Amphawa: Evening Food and Firefly Boats
Amphawa Floating Market is in Samut Songkhram province, about 90 km southwest of Bangkok. As of September 2026, it opens on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only, from about midday to 20:00-21:00, and it is busiest in the early evening.
Stay after dark for a firefly boat trip:
- A seat on a shared longtail boat costs about 60-80 THB per person; a private boat costs about 700-1,000 THB.
- Boats leave from about 18:30-19:00, and a trip lasts about 1 hour.
- The fireflies are best from June to October and weakest from March to May.
Minivans run to Amphawa or Samut Songkhram town from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) and take about 1.5-2 hours. If you stay for the fireflies, check the time of the last minivan back.
Damnoen Saduak: An Early-Morning Market on the Water
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in Ratchaburi province opens every morning: sources give 07:00-13:00 or 08:30-14:00. The busiest time on the water, before the tour coaches arrive, is about 08:00-09:30, so aim to be in a boat by about 08:00.
- There is no entrance fee. Anyone who asks you for one is running a scam.
- Boats are priced per boat, and prices vary by seller. One operator lists a paddle boat for up to 5 people at 400 THB for 30 minutes or 500 THB for 1 hour, and a motorboat for up to 6 people from 850 THB an hour. Other sellers quote 400 THB per person or 2,000 THB per boat. Before you board, agree the price, the time on the water, and whether it is per boat or per person.
Taling Chan: The Weekend Market Inside Bangkok
Taling Chan Floating Market is on Khlong Chak Phra in Bangkok's Taling Chan district. It opens on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 08:00 to 17:00.
Canal boat tours start at the market. A 3-hour tour of three floating markets leaves at 09:45 and costs about 99 THB per person. A shorter 1-hour tour to Wat Koh costs about 69 THB.
Dinner on a Rice Barge: Manohra Cruises
Manohra Cruises serve dinner on a restored rice barge on the Chao Phraya River. The boat leaves from the Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort, 257/1-3 Charoen Nakhon Road, on the Thonburi side of the river. Each cruise lasts 2 hours, with departures at 18:00, 19:00 and 20:30.

Dine in the Dark at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit
Dine in the Dark (DID) is at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, 250 Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok. You eat a four-course dinner in complete darkness, served by blind and visually impaired hosts.
- Menus: Asian, Western, vegetarian or surprise.
- Time: the meal takes about 2 hours; service runs from 18:00 to 22:00.

A Khantoke Dinner in Chiang Mai
At a khantoke dinner, guests sit on mats and eat Northern Thai dishes while traditional dances are performed. The Old Chiangmai Cultural Center, 185/3 Wualai Road, has served khantoke dinners since 1971.
As of September 2026:
- The restaurant opens at 18:30.
- The indoor show runs from 19:10 to 20:00, and the outdoor show from 20:00 to 20:30.
- Alcohol is not included in the dinner price.

On a Saturday you can combine the dinner with the Saturday Walking Street, which also runs along Wualai Road, from about 17:00 to 23:00.
Michelin Stars, From a Street Wok to Family-Style Thai
The MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2026 was announced on 27 November 2025. Two restaurants hold three stars, Sorn and Sühring; Sorn was the first Thai restaurant in the world to earn three stars.
- Jay Fai is street-food wok cooking in Bangkok, and it keeps one Michelin star in the 2026 guide.
- Bo.lan, 24 Sukhumvit Soi 53, cooks Thai food with rare regional produce from small farmers and serves it family style. It is a new one-star entry in the 2026 guide. It is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and service times vary by day.
Cook Your Own Dinner
Blue Elephant Cooking School Bangkok, on South Sathorn Road near BTS Surasak, teaches 4-5 dishes in a half-day class, and morning classes include a visit to a local market. Classes cost from about 2,943 THB per person. Phone: +66 2 673 9353.
In Chiang Mai, Thai Farm Cooking School runs a full-day class on an organic farm outside the city for 1,500 THB per person (1,300 THB on a low-season promotion until 21 October 2026). A minivan picks you up at 08:30-09:00 and brings you back at 16:00-16:30. Vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten-free menus are offered.
Before You Book: Bills and Alcohol
- Read the price sign. "++" on a Thai menu means 10% service charge and 7% VAT will be added to the bill. "Net" means both are already included. The Manohra prices are net; the Dine in the Dark price is "++".
- Alcohol hours. Since a regulation dated 29 May 2026, alcohol may be sold every day from 11:00 to midnight, with no afternoon break.
- Buddhist holidays. On these days alcohol sales are banned for 24 hours across the country. The next one in 2026 is Ok Phansa on 26 October. Licensed hotels and entertainment venues may still serve; ask the venue first.
Getting There by Private Car
Public transport costs less. A private car helps when a meal ends late, when you travel as a family or group, or when a market is outside the city.
Smile Taxi Service prices are fixed and per vehicle (not per person), with no meter. Transfer fares are one way and include expressway tolls.
- Arriving in Bangkok: Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok costs 600 THB by sedan, 800 THB by SUV or 1,100 THB by van. Book a sedan from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok.
- A full day of eating in Bangkok: the Bangkok Tour (up to 10 hours) costs 2,700 THB by sedan, 3,000 THB by SUV, 3,700 THB by van or 4,000 THB by VIP van.
- Chiang Mai: the Chiang Mai + Doi Tour (up to 10 hours) costs 3,300 THB by sedan, 3,500 THB by SUV, 4,000 THB by van or 4,500 THB by VIP van. Both tours are on the tours and day trips page.
- Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa: there is no fixed fare. Ask for a quote on WhatsApp or LINE.
- Manohra (Anantara Riverside): the pier is on the Thonburi side of the river. A Bangkok pickup or drop-off on the Thonburi side costs 100-200 THB extra.
You pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip. If you can only pay by card, message the team for a PayPal payment link; a 5% fee is added. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. After that, a cancellation or change costs 25% (less than 24 h), 35% (less than 12 h) or 50% (less than 2 h) of the price, and a no-show 100%, also when you pay the driver in cash (details).
