Thailand's traditional performances bring its history and legends to the stage, from masked Khon dancers and puppet theatre to the ritual and music of a Muay Thai night. This guide explains the main art forms, where you can still see them in Bangkok in 2026, which venues older guides list but no longer operate, and how to plan the evening.
Quick Guide: Where to See Performances in Bangkok
| Performance | Where | When | Tickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khon (masked dance drama) | Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre, 66 Charoen Krung Road | Ask the theatre for show days | Ask the theatre |
| Muay Thai | Rajadamnern Stadium, 8 Rajadamnern Nok Road | Every night | Prices on the stadium website |
| Muay Thai | Lumpinee Boxing Stadium, Ram Inthra Road | Tuesday, Friday and Saturday (confirm with the stadium) | Ask the stadium |
| Cabaret show | Calypso Cabaret, Asiatique The Riverfront | Daily | Book on the Calypso website |
Schedules were checked in September 2026 and change often, so confirm the date, time and price with the venue before you go.
Two venues from older guides are no longer operating. Siam Niramit in Bangkok (on Ratchada) stopped its shows on 17 March 2021 and closed permanently in September 2021; only Siam Niramit Phuket still runs. We also could not find a current venue for the Joe Louis puppet theatre, so do not plan an evening around it.
Classical Thai Dance and Drama
Khon (Masked Dance Drama)
Khon is one of the most formal Thai performing arts. It began as a court art. Dancers in carved masks and richly decorated costumes act out episodes from the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Indian epic Ramayana. The dancers do not speak: a narrator and a chorus tell the story, and a piphat ensemble of traditional percussion and wind instruments plays the music.
The main characters are Rama, his wife Sita, the demon king Tosakan (Ravana) who takes Sita away, and Hanuman, the white monkey warrior who helps Rama rescue her. Many scenes are battles between the monkey and demon armies.
Where to watch in Bangkok: the Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre at 66 Charoen Krung Road (Wang Burapha Phirom) stages a Khon show built around Hanuman. Its website did not list show days or prices when we checked. The theatre office is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00, including holidays; telephone +66 2 225 8757-8 or +66 2 623 8148. Details are on the Sala Chalermkrung website.
Before you go: read a short summary of the Ramakien; the story is easier to follow when you know the main characters.
Lakhon (Dance Drama)
Lakhon is a softer, more flowing form of dance drama. Most performers do not wear masks, and the stories include romances and folk tales. There are two traditional types:
- Lakhon nai: the refined style that developed inside the royal court.
- Lakhon nok: the livelier popular style that developed outside the court.
Ram Thai (Classical Dance)
Ram Thai is Thai classical dance performed by a soloist or a group, without a full story. Look for the slow, precise hand gestures and the fingers curved back. Short pieces are often performed as welcome dances at ceremonies and dinner shows.
Puppets and Shadow Theatre
Hun lakhon lek is Thai small-puppet theatre. Each puppet is moved by a team of puppeteers who dance on stage with it, in full view of the audience. In Bangkok it was linked to the Joe Louis theatre, but, as noted above, we found no current venue for it.
Nang talung is shadow puppet theatre from southern Thailand. Flat puppets cut from leather are held against a lit screen, and a single puppet master usually speaks all the voices, with live music. It is performed mainly at temple fairs and festivals in the south.
Muay Thai: Sport, Ritual and Music
Muay Thai is Thailand's national sport, and a stadium night is also a cultural event. Before each bout, the fighters perform the wai khru, a slow ritual dance that honours their teachers. During the fight, a small band plays traditional music, and the tempo rises as the round becomes more intense.
Rajadamnern Stadium
Rajadamnern Stadium, at 8 Rajadamnern Nok Road, now holds Muay Thai seven nights a week; older guides that list only some nights are out of date.
| Night | Event |
|---|---|
| Monday, Tuesday, Friday | Rajadamnern Knockout |
| Wednesday | New Power |
| Thursday | Petchyindee |
| Saturday | Rajadamnern World Series (RWS), doors open 18:00 |
| Sunday | Kiatpetch, doors open at about 17:00 |
Seats range from third class to ringside and VIP; the Rajadamnern seat types page explains each class. Current prices are only on the tickets page of the Rajadamnern Stadium website. Buy there rather than from street touts, and check the door time for the night you choose.
Lumpinee Boxing Stadium
Lumpinee Boxing Stadium moved to Ram Inthra Road in February 2014, so check that any address you find is the new one. As of September 2026, bouts are listed on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, usually from about 18:00. Confirm the day and time with the stadium before you go.
Evening Shows and Cabaret
Calypso Cabaret is a modern cabaret show with costumes and dance numbers, not a traditional art form, but many visitors combine it with a riverside evening. It is at Asiatique The Riverfront, 2194 Charoen Krung Road (Soi 72-76), Bang Kho Laem, and Asiatique lists daily performances. Book on the Calypso Cabaret website or call +66 86 349 1937. Asiatique is open daily from 11:00 to 00:00, so you can arrive early for dinner by the river.
Siam Niramit now runs only in Phuket. The Phuket show reopened on 20 October 2022; it lasts about 70 minutes and has more than 100 performers. If you are travelling to Phuket, see our guide on how to get from Bangkok to Phuket.
Regional Performance Styles
Each region has its own dances and music, best seen at festivals, temple fairs and dinner shows in the region itself.
- Northern Thailand (Lanna): the fon lep, or fingernail dance, is performed by women wearing long brass fingernail extensions, with slow and graceful movements. In Chiang Mai it often appears at khantoke dinners, where guests eat northern dishes from low round trays while dancers perform.
- Northeastern Thailand (Isan): mor lam is a style of folk singing, often in a call-and-response form, accompanied by the khaen, a bamboo mouth organ.
- Southern Thailand: manora (also called nora) is a dance with bird-like movements, performed in elaborate headdresses and beaded costumes. It has both ritual and entertainment roles. Nang talung shadow theatre also comes from the south.
For the north, our guide explains how to get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
Festivals with Performances
Festivals are a good time to see performances outdoors, often for free.
- Loy Krathong: held on the full moon of the 12th lunar month. The dates are 24 November 2026 and 13 November 2027. Local celebrations often include stage shows, so check the programme in the town you visit.
- Songkran: the Thai New Year public holiday was 13-15 April in 2026. Check the 2027 dates before you plan a trip around them.
- Bangkok Art Biennale 2026: from 29 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, with 10 venues that include Wat Arun, Wat Pho, Museum Siam and the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). It is an art event rather than a performance series. Details are on the Bangkok Art Biennale website.
Getting to an Evening Show
Shows and fights end late, so arrange your ride home in advance. Smile Taxi Service has no fixed fare for short trips inside Bangkok, so ask for a quote on WhatsApp or LINE. Pickups or drop-offs on the Thonburi side, west of the Chao Phraya, cost 100-200 THB extra.
For a full day of sightseeing that ends at a show, the Bangkok Tour gives you a private car and driver for up to 10 hours at a fixed price per vehicle: 2,700 THB for a sedan, 3,000 THB for an SUV, 3,700 THB for a van and 4,000 THB for a VIP van. Details are on our tours and day trips page.
Arriving in Bangkok first? Smile Taxi Service fares are fixed, per vehicle (not per person) and one way, with expressway tolls included:

Airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting from the actual landing time. Book a sedan from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok or book a sedan from Don Mueang Airport to Bangkok. You pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. After that, a cancellation or change costs 25% (less than 24 h), 35% (less than 12 h) or 50% (less than 2 h) of the price, and a no-show 100%, also when you pay the driver in cash (details).
Tips for Watching a Performance
- Buy from the venue. Use the theatre's or stadium's own website or ticket office, not street touts.
- Check the date again the day before. Programmes change.
- Dress for temples if you visit one on the same day. Covered shoulders, upper arms and knees meet the dress code at the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun.
- Ask about photography. Rules differ between venues, and flash can disturb the performers.
