A culinary tour takes you to the stalls, shops and markets that locals use, while a guide explains what you are eating and how it is made. This article covers tours, neighbourhoods, costs and self-guided food walks.
Discover Bangkok Through Its Food
Each part of Bangkok has its own food. Yaowarat (Chinatown) is famous for its night-time street food. Bang Rak is a historic district with a daytime tour of its own, and the old town (Phra Nakhon) has some of the best-known shops. Across the Chao Phraya River, the Thonburi side has canals and local markets. Jay Fai, known for street-food wok cooking, keeps one Michelin star in the MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2026.
You can explore on your own, but a guide knows which stalls are open on which days, orders for you in Thai and explains each dish. A tour suits a first evening in the city, travellers with dietary rules, and anyone who wants to try many small dishes without planning the route.
Types of Culinary Tours Available
Most food tours are on foot; some add the canals or travel by tuk-tuk. The table shows the tours offered by one operator, Bangkok Food Tours, as an example.
| Tour | Length and start time | Price per adult | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yaowarat Street Food Tour | 3 hours, 18:00 | about 1,800 THB | A first evening of street food in Chinatown |
| Historic Bangrak Food Tasting and Culture Tour | 3.5 hours, 13:00 | about 1,700 THB | A daytime tour with history and culture |
| Thonburi Food and Canals Adventure | 5 hours, 09:00 | about 2,500 THB | Canals and local life, in the morning |
| Midnight Food Tour by Tuk Tuk | about 3 hours, from 18:00 | about 2,500 THB | Seeing several areas in one evening |
| Happy Veggies vegetarian tour | 4 hours, 13:30 | from about 2,400 THB | Vegetarians |
These prices come from the operator's website. Prices and opening hours in this article were checked in September 2026. They change, so confirm them when you book (phone or WhatsApp +66 95 943 9222). Most of these tours can be joined as part of a group or booked privately.
Walking, canal and tuk-tuk tours
The Chinatown tour starts when the stalls on Yaowarat Road open in the evening; the Bang Rak tour runs in the afternoon. The Thonburi tour starts in the morning and adds the canals (khlongs) west of the river. A tuk-tuk tour covers several neighbourhoods in one evening, with less walking.
Vegetarian and halal tours
Many Thai dishes contain fish sauce, shrimp paste or pork, so on a vegetarian or halal tour you do not need to ask about the ingredients at each stall. Bangkok Food Tours runs the Happy Veggies vegetarian tour and a halal-specific tour.
Top Culinary Tour Neighbourhoods
Yaowarat (Chinatown)
Yaowarat is Bangkok's best-known street food district. Stalls trade from about 18:00 to about midnight; the nearest station is MRT Wat Mangkon, Exit 3.
Bang Rak
The Historic Bangrak tour explores this district in the afternoon. For a sit-down meal, 100 Mahaseth on Mahaseth Road serves nose-to-tail Isan (northeastern Thai) food and is listed in the Michelin Guide. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 11:30 to 22:30 and is closed on Mondays.
The old town (Phra Nakhon)
Two famous shops are in the old town. Thipsamai, at 313-315 Maha Chai Road, is known for Pad Thai wrapped in egg. The original shop opens from 09:00 to midnight and is closed every Tuesday, and dishes cost about 60-100 THB. Kor Panich, at 431-433 Tanao Road, sells mango sticky rice for about 130 THB. It has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand since 2019, opens Monday to Saturday from about 07:00, and is closed on Sundays.
Thonburi and the canals
Wang Lang (Siriraj) Market opens about 08:00-19:00, and most stalls trade from 10:00 to 17:00. To get there, take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Wang Lang Pier (N10). Taling Chan Floating Market opens on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 08:00 to 17:00. A 3-hour boat tour to three floating markets leaves at 09:45 and costs about 99 THB per person.
Khlong Toei Market
Khlong Toei is Bangkok's big wet (fresh) market. As of September 2026, it trades almost 24 hours a day and is busiest before dawn, so go before 09:00 to see it at its liveliest. Wear shoes that can get wet. The market is about a 4-minute walk from MRT Queen Sirikit.
Self-Guided Food Walks
Go to night markets after about 19:00, when all the food stalls are open, choose busy stalls where the food is cooked to order, and budget about 200-400 THB per person to graze. Typical night-market prices in 2026:
| Dish | Approximate price |
|---|---|
| Pad Thai with prawns | 80-150 THB |
| Som tam (papaya salad) | 40-60 THB |
| Grilled chicken | 60-120 THB |
| Boat noodles | 20-40 THB a bowl |
| Grilled river prawns | 150-250 THB |
| Mango sticky rice | 60-100 THB |
| Thai tea, cocoa or juice | 35-69 THB |
Night markets on Ratchadaphisek Road
Two night markets are close to MRT Thailand Cultural Centre, and both open daily from 17:00 to 01:00. Jodd Fairs Ratchada is at 129 Ratchadaphisek Road, 2-3 minutes' walk from Exit 4. Train Night Market Ratchada reopened on 27 March 2026 behind Esplanade Ratchadaphisek, near Exit 3.
A morning at Or Tor Kor
Or Tor Kor is an indoor market with more than 600 vendors, opposite Chatuchak Weekend Market (open Saturday and Sunday, 09:00-18:00). From MRT Kamphaeng Phet, take Exit 3 and the market is straight ahead. As of September 2026, all stalls are open from about 08:30; check the hours with the market before an early visit. Prices are higher than at ordinary markets, and it is very crowded on Chatuchak weekends, so a weekday is calmer.
Before You Go
- Wear comfortable shoes and light clothing, and carry small notes for stalls.
- Tell the operator about allergies and dietary rules when you book, and carry a written note of them in Thai.
- Ask what the price includes, such as all food, drinks and transport between stops.
- Check closing days. Thipsamai closes on Tuesdays, Kor Panich on Sundays and 100 Mahaseth on Mondays. Taling Chan Floating Market opens only at weekends and on public holidays.
- Drinks: the old 2-5 pm ban has ended, and alcohol can be sold from 11:00 to midnight. On Buddhist holidays shops and most restaurants stop selling for 24 hours; the next one is Ok Phansa, 26 October 2026. The legal drinking age is 20.
- Menus: "++" means 10% service charge and 7% VAT will be added; "net" means both are included.

See the tours and day trips page. For floating markets outside Bangkok there is no fixed fare: ask for a quote on WhatsApp or LINE.
You pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip. If you can only pay by card, message the team for a PayPal payment link; a 5% fee is added. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. After that, a cancellation or change costs 25% (less than 24 h), 35% (less than 12 h) or 50% (less than 2 h) of the price, and a no-show 100%, also when you pay the driver in cash (details).
