You do not need to speak Thai to travel in Thailand, but a few words and the right tools make every day easier. Hotels, airports and many tourist businesses have staff who speak English. Outside tourist areas, a translation app, written Thai and a smile will get you much further than raising your voice.

Thai language basics

How does the Thai script work?

Thai has its own alphabet, which developed from the Old Khmer script. It has 44 consonant letters, two of which (ฃ and ฅ) are no longer used. It has 16 vowel symbols, which combine into at least 32 vowel forms, and 4 tone marks. Vowels can sit before, after, above or below a consonant, and words are written without spaces between them. Learning to read takes weeks rather than days, so most visitors start with spoken phrases and a few common signs.

Central Thai is the only official language. Thai has about 71 million speakers in total (2024), counting first and second languages, and more than 60 languages are spoken in the country.

Is Thai really a tonal language?

Yes. Central Thai has five tones, and the tone changes the meaning of a word. The classic example is one syllable, "kha", said in five different ways:

You will get tones wrong at first, and that is normal: Thai people usually understand learners from the context.

What are "khrap" and "kha"?

They are polite particles added at the end of a sentence. Men say khrap (ครับ) and women say kha (ค่ะ). "Sa-wat-dee khrap" or "sa-wat-dee kha" is a polite hello. Adding the particle to almost any phrase makes it softer and more respectful.

Does Google Translate work offline for Thai?

Yes, once you have downloaded Thai inside the app. Open Google Translate, find Thai in the language list and tap the download icon next to it. Do this on Wi-Fi before you fly, so the app works on arrival even without mobile data.

How should I set up my phone?

• Add a Thai keyboard, so you can type or paste Thai words.

• Take screenshots of important translations in case you lose signal.
• Download offline maps of the places you will visit.

Where will I find English speakers?

English is widely used in hotels, airports, international hospitals, tour companies and larger restaurants in tourist areas. It is less common at street food stalls, local markets and small shops, in rural areas and among older people. In the northeast (Isan), many people speak Isan at home, a language close to Lao, but everyone understands Central Thai. Use standard Thai phrases there, and add "khop jai" (thank you in Isan) as a friendly extra.

Body language and etiquette

• The wai. This is the Thai greeting with palms pressed together and a slight bow. Return a wai when someone gives you one, and raise your hands higher for monks and elders. When shop or hotel staff wai you, a smile and a nod is enough.
• Smiling. Thai people smile in many situations, including when they are embarrassed or want to avoid a conflict. Smile back.
• Stay calm. Showing anger in public causes loss of face for everyone, and it rarely solves anything. A calm, friendly tone gets better results.
• Head and feet. The head is the most respected part of the body, so do not touch anyone's head. Do not point your feet at people or at Buddha images.
• Beckoning. To call someone over, wave your fingers towards you with the palm facing down.

How do I get from the airport if I do not speak Thai?

A pickup or drop-off west of the Chao Phraya River (Thonburi side) costs 100-200 THB extra. You pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip. What should I do when communication fails?

1. Try a simpler word, or say the same thing more slowly (not louder).
2. Show a photo, a map or the written Thai on your phone.
3. Write numbers down, or type them on a phone.
4. Speak or type the sentence into a translation app.
5. Ask a younger person nearby, or call your hotel and hand over the phone.
6. For anything serious, call the Tourist Police on 1155.
