Kanchanaburi has no airport, so you travel by road or rail.
- By road: since 31 October 2025, the M81 motorway runs 96 km from Bang Yai (in Nonthaburi province, west of Bangkok) to Kanchanaburi. It is now the main fast road to the province.
- By rail: Thonburi station to Kanchanaburi station is 116 km, and to River Kwai Bridge station 119 km.
- Travel times: about 2.5 hours by minibus from Sai Tai Mai, about 3 hours from Mo Chit, and about 2 h 25 min to 2 h 35 min by the daily train. By private car, ask the team for an estimate.

By minibus from Sai Tai Mai or Mo Chit
The scheduled minibus is the most frequent public transport to Kanchanaburi. The main operator, Kanchanaburi Express Co., Ltd., runs minibuses from two Bangkok terminals. Its call centre number is 064-963-9979.
Important: no minibuses leave from Victory Monument. On 25 October 2016 all van services there moved to the Mo Chit 2, Sai Tai Mai and Ekkamai terminals.
From Sai Tai Mai (Southern Bus Terminal)
- Where: in the far west of Bangkok, on Borommaratchachonnani Road. The nearest rail stations are Taling Chan on the SRT Red Line and BTS Bang Wa, which is about 10 km away. You need a taxi from either station. City buses 28, 40, 79, 124, 507, 511, 515, 516 and 556 come from the Khao San, Victory Monument and Siam areas.
- Tickets: minibus tickets are sold outside, at the minibus platform on the east side; regular bus tickets on floor 1 of the terminal.
- Fare and timetable: about 110 THB. Departures at 05:00, then every hour until 18:00, plus 19:10 and 19:50 (16 a day).
From the Mochit New Van Terminal
- Where: across Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road from Mo Chit 2 bus terminal. MRT Kamphaeng Phet (Exit 1) is about 2 km away and BTS Mo Chit about 2.3 km. The Kanchanaburi minibuses there run as line 81 and line 9918.
- Fare and timetable: about 130 THB. Departures at 05:00, then every hour until 18:00, plus 18:40, 19:20 and 20:00.
Booking and arrival
Seats can be booked on the Kanchanaburi Express website, which also shows the current timetables. Booking ahead is useful on weekends and holidays. In Kanchanaburi the minibuses stop at Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal on U-Thong Road, and you take local transport to your hotel.
Pros: cheap, frequent from early morning to evening, bookable online.
Cons: both terminals are outside central Bangkok and away from the rail stations, you share the vehicle, and you arrive at the bus terminal, not at your hotel.
By train from Thonburi station
The train is the scenic choice: after Kanchanaburi it crosses the Bridge on the River Kwai and continues along the Death Railway to Nam Tok.
The daily ordinary trains
The daily trains leave from Thonburi station (also called Bangkok Noi), not from Hua Lamphong or Krung Thep Aphiwat. Take the MRT Blue Line to Bang Khun Non, then walk 750 m (about 9 minutes).

- Fare: foreign passengers pay a flat 100 THB for any distance on the line.
- Tickets: no reservations and no online sales. Buy at the station window, and arrive 30 minutes to an hour early.
- On board: fans, no air-conditioning, a toilet. Bring water.
Pros: cheap and scenic; the same 100 THB ticket takes you across the bridge and on to Nam Tok.
Cons: only two departures a day, no air-conditioning, and no advance booking.
The weekend excursion train from Hua Lamphong
On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, train 909 leaves Hua Lamphong (MRT Blue Line) at 06:30 and reaches Kanchanaburi at 09:35 and Nam Tok at 11:30. It stops for about 40 minutes at Nakhon Pathom and 20–30 minutes at the River Kwai Bridge. Round trips cost about 120–150 THB in fan-cooled 3rd class and 240–300 THB in air-conditioned 2nd class. Reserve in advance at a station or on SRT D-Ticket: seats often sell out, and tickets are non-refundable.

From Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airport
The main minibus operator's 2026 timetable shows no direct minibus from either airport, so by public transport you change in Bangkok.
- From Don Mueang: city bus A1 runs to Mo Chit 2 bus terminal for 30 THB, every 15 minutes from 05:45 to 24:00, boarding in front of the Service Hall building or at Terminal 1, floor 1, Gate 6. Then cross Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road to the Mochit New Van Terminal. By rail, take the SRT Red Line to Krung Thep Aphiwat, then the MRT Blue Line to Bang Khun Non (for Thonburi station) or Hua Lamphong.
- From Suvarnabhumi: there is no direct public bus. The public taxi counter is on Floor 1 between Gates 4 and 7, open 24 hours. Airport taxis add a 50 THB surcharge to the meter, and passengers pay the tolls. For trips to some nearby provinces the airport allows a fare agreed with the driver instead of the meter. Kanchanaburi is not on the airport's list, so expect to agree the price with the driver before you leave.
- Grab: advance bookings can be made from 90 days to 75 minutes before pickup and are cashless only. Cancellation is free up to 1 hour before pickup, and the driver waits up to 15 minutes. Check the fare in the app.

Driving yourself on the M81 motorway
Tolls on the M81 have been charged by distance since 16 January 2026: up to 150 THB for a car over the full length. There are no barriers: pay with an M-Flow account, in cash at the exit booth, or afterwards by QR code or at 7-Eleven within 7 days. The speed limit is 120 km/h for cars. Smile fares already include these tolls.
Practical tips for this route
- Choose the terminal closer to your hotel: Sai Tai Mai in the west or the Mochit New Van Terminal in the north.
- Arriving in the evening: the last minibuses leave Bangkok at 19:50 (Sai Tai Mai) and 20:00 (Mo Chit). After a late flight, a pre-booked car is the practical choice.
- Families: choose the vehicle by bags as well as passengers (sedan 2, SUV 4, van 5), and ask for a child seat when you book.
- Where you arrive: minibuses stop at Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal; trains at Kanchanaburi station or River Kwai Bridge station, 3 km further on.
- Erawan National Park, about 70 km from town, opens daily at 08:00 and admits no one after 15:30. Foreign adults pay 300 THB and foreign children aged 3–14 pay 150 THB (fees as of June 2026). Food is not allowed beyond the second tier of the waterfall.
- Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum is open daily 09:00–16:00 but closes on 13–15 April, 5 December, 24–27 December, 31 December and 1 January. Wear shoes with grip on its 2.5 km trail and carry water.
The return journey
- Minibus: from Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal to Sai Tai Mai and Mo Chit, from 04:00 about every 30–40 minutes; the last leaves at 19:00. The minibuses also stop at the Chatuchak Park bus stop, near BTS Mo Chit and MRT Chatuchak Park, which is easier to continue from than the van terminal.
- Daily train: train 260 leaves Kanchanaburi at 07:05 (Thonburi 09:35); train 258 leaves at 14:43 (Thonburi 17:40).
- Weekend train: on weekends and holidays, train 910 leaves Kanchanaburi at 16:54 and reaches Hua Lamphong at 19:30; reservation needed. Expect 30–60 minutes of delay.
- Private car: the same fixed fares, 2,000 THB (sedan), 2,300 THB (SUV) or 2,800 THB (van), from your hotel door to Bangkok or either airport.
