Thailand's markets, festivals and nightlife streets draw large crowds for much of the year, and pickpockets work where crowds are. This guide explains where the biggest crowds gather, how to protect your belongings and yourself, and what to do if something goes wrong.
Where Thailand Gets Most Crowded
| Place | Where | When |
|---|---|---|
| Chatuchak Weekend Market | Bangkok | Saturday and Sunday, 09:00-18:00 |
| Songkran (Thai New Year) | Nationwide | 13-15 April |
| Loy Krathong | Nationwide, by rivers and lakes | 24 November 2026; 13 November 2027 |
| Full Moon Party | Haad Rin Sunrise Beach, Koh Phangan | Party nights (check the date locally) |
These dates and opening hours were checked in September 2026. Confirm them locally before you go.
Chatuchak has more than 15,000 stalls and about 200,000 visitors each weekend. Night markets and walking streets are busy too, such as the Rot Fai (Train) Night Market in Bangkok, the Sunday Walking Street and the Night Bazaar in Chiang Mai, and Pai Walking Street.
Protecting Your Belongings
Choose the Right Bag
- Wear a cross-body bag in front of you, zipped. In dense crowds, wear a backpack on your chest.
- Avoid open-top bags and bags with outside pockets.
- Never keep a phone or wallet in a back pocket.
What to Carry and What to Leave
Take some cash split between two places, one bank card, a copy of your passport photo page, a charged phone and a card with your hotel's address in Thai. Leave your passport, spare cards, extra cash and expensive jewellery in the hotel safe.
Thai police can ask to see your passport. They may give you 24 hours to show it, and a copy of the photo page is usually enough. Never leave your passport with a motorbike or jet-ski rental business as a guarantee: some have kept passports to demand money for claimed damage.
How Pickpockets Work
Pickpockets often work in teams: one person distracts you while another takes your wallet or phone. Typical distractions:
- Someone bumps into you.
- A stranger holds a map in front of you and asks for directions.
- Something is spilled on your clothes and someone offers to help.
- An argument starts nearby and everyone turns to watch.
When this happens, put a hand on your bag before you look. At a street-side table, keep your bag on your lap, not on a chair or the floor.
Physical Safety in Dense Crowds
In a very dense crowd, the warning signs of danger are pressure from several sides, a crowd that moves in waves, and people falling or struggling to breathe. If this happens:
- Stay on your feet. If you drop something, leave it.
- Keep your arms bent in front of your chest to protect your breathing space.
- Move diagonally towards the edge, not directly against the flow.
Before you enter a very crowded area, note two ways out, see where police or security staff are standing, and agree on a meeting point with your group.
Market Safety
- Chatuchak opens fully on Saturday and Sunday at 09:00. Arrive at opening time to avoid the heaviest crowds. On Wednesday and Thursday only the plant section is open (07:00-18:00), and on Friday from 18:00 the market is for wholesale buyers.
- Save the market map on your phone and choose a meeting point, because many lanes look alike.
- Keep small notes ready so you do not show a lot of cash, and count your change.
- After dark, stay on the main, well-lit lanes.
Festival Safety
Songkran (Thai New Year)
Songkran is a public holiday from 13 to 15 April, and in many towns it becomes a huge water fight.
- Put your phone, cash and passport copy in a waterproof pouch.
- Wear quick-drying clothes and shoes with a good grip, because the streets become slippery.
- Do not ride a motorbike. Drink-driving is strictly enforced at Songkran, and riders and passengers without a helmet can be fined up to 2,000 THB.
Loy Krathong
On Loy Krathong night, people gather by rivers, canals and lakes to float small decorated baskets.
- Stay back from the water's edge; banks and piers become crowded and slippery in the dark. Keep children close.
- In Bangkok, releasing sky lanterns and setting off fireworks at Loy Krathong is banned. People who break this rule can be sent to prison, fined, or both.
Full Moon Party (Koh Phangan)
Assaults, robberies and hotel-room break-ins during the party have been reported, and undercover police patrol for drugs.
- Lock your passport and spare cash away, and lock your room.
- Stay with your friends and agree on how you will get back.
- Never leave a drink unattended or accept one from a stranger: drink spiking followed by robbery or assault has been reported.
- Drink only sealed, branded drinks. Drinks contaminated with methanol have killed travellers.
- Do not buy or carry drugs. Possession of Class A drugs can bring the death penalty.
Getting Around at Busy Times
Skytrain, Metro and Songthaew
On the BTS Skytrain and MRT, stand back from the platform edge and keep your bag in front of you. In a songthaew (shared pickup truck), keep your bag on your lap and never stand on the step at the back of the truck.
Taxis After Crowded Events
When a festival or market closes, everyone wants a ride at once. The Government of Canada warns that taxi fare disputes in Thailand sometimes turn into threats. If you take a public taxi in Bangkok, ask the driver to use the meter; the official rate starts at 35 THB for the first kilometre.
A pre-booked transfer with a fixed fare avoids fare disputes. With Smile Taxi Service the fare is fixed, one way and per vehicle (not per person), and it includes expressway tolls. Before the trip you receive the driver's name, the car and its plate number, and the driver meets you at the door of your hotel or address. You pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip; if you can only pay by card, message the team for a PayPal payment link (a 5% fee is added). Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. After that, a cancellation or change costs 25% (less than 24 h), 35% (less than 12 h) or 50% (less than 2 h) of the price, and a no-show 100%, also when you pay the driver in cash (details).
Fixed fares (sedan / SUV / van, one way):
- Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok: 600 / 800 / 1,100 THB. Book a sedan from Suvarnabhumi to Bangkok
- Bangkok to Pattaya: 1,500 / 1,700 / 2,000 THB. Book a sedan from Bangkok to Pattaya
To visit several busy places in one day, a full-day Bangkok Tour (up to 10 hours) with your own driver costs 2,700 / 3,000 / 3,700 / 4,000 THB for a sedan, SUV, van or VIP van. See private tours and day trips, all routes and prices, or the guide How to Get from Bangkok to Pattaya.
If Something Goes Wrong
If You Lose Something or It Is Stolen
- Check the area and ask nearby stall holders or security staff.
- Call the Tourist Police on 1155. The line is open 24 hours a day, with English-speaking operators.
- Block your bank cards at once. For a lost or stolen Visa card, you can call Visa collect on +1 303 967 1096 from anywhere in the world (hotel and mobile phones may still charge for the call).
- Ask the police for a report, because your insurer will need it for a claim.
If you were cheated rather than robbed, you can also contact the tourist-fraud assistance office of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports at Suvarnabhumi Airport on 0 2134 4077 (24 hours).
If You Get Separated From Your Group
Before you go in, choose an easy meeting point, such as a main entrance, save each other's numbers and turn on location sharing. If your phone is lost or empty, go to the meeting point and wait there instead of searching the crowd.
Emergency Numbers
Save these numbers before you arrive, together with your own embassy's number from its official website.
| Service | Number |
|---|---|
| Police and general emergency | 191 |
| Ambulance (medical emergency) | 1669 |

The "Thailand Tourist Police" app works without a Thai SIM card and sends alerts about safety concerns near you.
