With some preparation, Thailand is a comfortable country to travel alone. The main risks are well known: road accidents, spiked or contaminated drinks, scams, and rules that changed in 2025 and 2026. The rules, prices and phone numbers below were checked in September 2026.
Before You Fly: Paperwork and Insurance
- Visa-free stay: from 15 September 2026, nationals of 60 countries (including the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, India, Japan and most EU states) can stay up to 30 days visa-free for tourism. The old 60-day exemption no longer exists.
- Overstaying: the fine is 500 THB per day, up to 20,000 THB. If you are arrested for overstaying, you are also banned from returning to Thailand: for 5 years if the overstay was under 1 year.
- Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC): every foreign visitor arriving by air, land or sea must complete it online within the 3 days before arrival.
- Passport: it must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival and have at least 1 blank page. Officers may ask you to show at least 10,000 THB per person.
- Travel insurance: choose a policy that covers your whole itinerary, your planned activities and emergency costs. Hospitals require a guarantee of payment or proof of insurance before treatment, so save your insurer's 24-hour number and your policy number.
Leave your itinerary and a copy of your passport with someone at home, and save your embassy's number from its official website. The UK government's Thailand entry requirements page lists the latest rules.
Your First Ride from the Airport
Arriving alone and tired, perhaps late at night, is when a bad offer is easiest to accept, so book your first ride in advance. With Smile Taxi Service, the fare is fixed per vehicle, one way, with expressway tolls included, and there is no meter. Before the trip the team sends you the driver's name, the car and the plate number, so you can check the plate before you get in.
- Meeting point: at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), the driver meets you on Level 4 (Departures), near Gate 4. At Don Mueang (DMK) the meeting point is on Level 3 (Departures), and the exact door comes with the driver's details. At both airports, message on WhatsApp or LINE once you have your bags, and the car pulls up in about 5–10 minutes.
- Waiting time: airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting, counted from the actual landing time. A person checks your flight.
- Language: not every driver speaks English; you can request an English-speaking driver when you book, subject to availability.
- Extras on request: a name sign at the arrivals gate costs 100 THB, and a free 500 MB Thailand eSIM is available with an airport pickup if you ask when booking.
- Payment: you pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip. If you can only pay by card, message the team for a PayPal payment link; a 5% fee is added.
- Cancellation: free up to 24 hours before pickup. After that, a cancellation or change costs 25% (less than 24 h), 35% (less than 12 h) or 50% (less than 2 h) of the price, and a no-show 100%, also when you pay the driver in cash (details).
| Route | Sedan | SUV | Van |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Bangkok | 600 THB | 800 THB | 1,100 THB |
| Don Mueang (DMK) to Bangkok | 600 THB | 800 THB | 1,000 THB |
These are fixed fares per vehicle, one way. A sedan carries up to 3 passengers with 2 bags, and the fare is the same for 1 passenger as for a full car. Book a sedan from Suvarnabhumi to Bangkok or book a sedan from Don Mueang to Bangkok.
For a local SIM card, True and dtac sell a Tourist SIM at airport counters open 24 hours a day: 8 days with unlimited data for 449 THB (price checked in September 2026), passport required. Mobile data is safer than open Wi-Fi for banking.
Choosing a Safe Place to Stay
Book at least your first night before you arrive. When you compare places, look for:
- a reception desk that is staffed 24 hours a day;
- firm door locks and well-lit corridors;
- comments from other solo travellers about how safe they felt;
- female-only dormitories, if you prefer one in a hostel.
Keep your passport in the safe and carry a copy of the photo page: police may give you 24 hours to show your passport, and a copy is usually enough. Carry the hotel's address written in Thai, so any driver can read it.
Getting Around on Your Own
Taxis and ride-hailing apps
With a ride-hailing app, send the trip details to someone you trust, check the plate before you get in, and sit in the back seat.
In Bangkok, metered taxis start at 35 THB, which covers the first kilometre, and the fare then rises with distance. Ask the driver to use the meter before you get in. The Canadian government reports that disputes over taxi overcharging can turn into threats. If an argument starts, leave when it is safe and call the Tourist Police on 1155.
For longer trips, see the Smile Taxi Service fare list or our guides on how to get from Bangkok to Pattaya and how to get from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
Scooters and motorbikes
According to the UK government, the World Health Organization ranks Thailand among the deadliest countries in the world for motorcycle deaths. If you still decide to ride:
- You need a valid motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit. Riding without a valid licence can invalidate your travel insurance.
- The rider and the passenger must both wear a helmet. Since 1 June 2025 police have enforced this with fines of up to 2,000 THB, doubled to 4,000 THB when neither the rider nor the passenger wears one.
- Never leave your passport with a rental business as a guarantee. Photograph the vehicle before you ride.
Boats
Boat risks include overloading, poor maintenance and rough seas, worst in the monsoon. If a boat looks overcrowded, wait for the next one.
Nights Out, Drinks and New People
According to the UK government, assaults are most common at full moon parties and near bars, and Canada warns of drink spiking followed by robbery or assault. When you travel alone, nobody else watches your drink, so:
- Never leave a drink unattended and never accept a drink from a stranger.
- Drink only sealed, branded spirits. Travellers have died from drinks contaminated with methanol, and even a small amount can kill.
- Plan your ride back before you go out, and meet new people, including dates from apps, in public places first.
- At the Full Moon Party on Haad Rin Sunrise Beach, Koh Phangan, assaults, robberies and hotel-room break-ins have been reported, and undercover police patrol for drugs.
Since 29 May 2026, licensed shops, restaurants and bars may sell alcohol from 11:00 to midnight. Outside those hours, only international airport terminals, licensed hotels, licensed entertainment venues and designated event venues may sell it. Customers can be fined up to 10,000 THB for drinking in a venue during the banned hours, although as of September 2026 officials have mostly given warnings.
Scams to Recognise
- Gems and jewellery: sellers promise that you can resell the stones for a profit, and the promise is never kept.
- Rental damage: some jet-ski and motorbike rental firms keep your passport and demand money for damage they say you caused.
Report tourist fraud to the Tourist Police on 1155 or to the tourist-fraud office at Suvarnabhumi Airport on 0 2134 4077 (both 24 hours), and ask for a police report for your insurer.
For Women Travelling Alone
Thailand is generally safe for women travelling alone. Take extra care with drinks and late-night journeys, and say no firmly and politely to unwanted attention. Before a Smile transfer, the team sends the driver's name, car and plate number, so you can forward them to a friend.
Laws and Areas to Avoid
- Vapes: e-cigarettes are illegal to bring in, own or use. Fines are typically 5,000–30,000 THB, detention is possible, and bringing them into Thailand can lead to up to 10 years in prison.
- Cannabis: since 26 June 2025, cannabis flower requires a prescription from a Thai-licensed practitioner; a foreign prescription does not count. Recreational use is illegal, and smoking in public is prohibited.
- Other drugs: possession of Class A drugs can bring the death penalty, and small quantities can bring heavy fines or prison.
- The monarchy: criticising the monarchy is a crime with a long prison sentence, and this includes posts and shared articles online.
- Border areas: as of September 2026, the UK advises against travel within 20 km of the land border with Cambodia. It also advises against all but essential travel to Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces and to the Chana, Thepa, Na Thawi and Saba Yoi districts of Songkhla province, in the far south. Insurance can be invalid if you travel against your government's advice.
Emergency Numbers to Save
| Service | Number |
|---|---|
| Police and general emergency | 191 |
| Ambulance | 1669 |
| Fire | 199 |
| Tourist Police (24 hours, English-speaking) | 1155 |
Install the Thailand Tourist Police app, which works without a Thai SIM card. Private international hospitals in Bangkok include Bumrungrad (+66 2 066 8888), BNH (+66 2 022 0700) and Samitivej (+66 2 022 2222). Give the hospital your insurer's details at once.
