Bangkok's Children’s Discovery Museum

Bangkok's Children's Discovery Museum is in Queen Sirikit Park, in the Chatuchak district. Bangkok's city culture and tourism department has announced that the museum closes from 1 October 2026, together with the second Children's Discovery Museum in Thung Khru district, while the city looks for a new operator. No reopening date has been given.

This page explains what the closure means for your trip, which family attractions in and around Bangkok are open instead, and how to plan a comfortable day out with children. Details were checked in September 2026.

Is the Children's Discovery Museum Open?

No, not from 1 October 2026. According to the Bangkok Post, both of the city's children's discovery museums close on that date because the city needs to select a new operator to run them. They will reopen only after a new operator has been chosen. City Hall has promised to reopen them quickly, but it has not announced a date. You can read the report on the Bangkok Post website.

Treat both museums (Chatuchak and Thung Khru) as closed until the city announces a reopening.

What This Means for Your Trip

Many older guides, including an earlier version of this page, list opening hours, an entrance fee, a phone number and exhibit zones for the museum. We could not confirm those details with a current source, so do not rely on them.

If a visit to the museum was the main reason for your day in Chatuchak, here is what we suggest:

  1. Check the news before you go. A few days before your trip, search for recent news about Bangkok's children's discovery museums.
  2. Do not go without confirmation. Until an official reopening date is announced, expect the museum to be closed.
  3. Choose an alternative that fits the day you planned. If you wanted an indoor, hands-on morning, SEA LIFE Bangkok is the closest match. If you wanted a free outing, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) costs nothing to enter. If you wanted a full day out, Dream World is a theme park north of the city.

Family Attractions That Are Open Instead

The table below compares the main alternatives. Prices and hours were checked in September 2026 (the Dream World price was seen in September 2025) and can change, so please confirm them with each venue before you go.

SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World

SEA LIFE Bangkok is an indoor aquarium in the Siam Paragon shopping centre. It is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00, with last entry at 19:00. Its zones include Rainforest Adventure, Coral Reefs, Shark Walk, ocean tunnels, a Penguin Ice Playground and a jellyfish area. Extras include a 4D cinema, virtual reality and a glass-bottom boat.

Walk-in tickets start from about 799 THB for a child, and booking online on the SEA LIFE Bangkok website saves up to 27%. Allow about 2 hours for a visit. Because it is indoors, it suits the hottest part of the day.

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC)

BACC is an art centre at 939 Rama I Road, Pathumwan, next to BTS National Stadium. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00 and is closed on Monday. Entry is free, so you can visit for an hour with children and leave when they are tired. Check the BACC website for current exhibitions.

From 29 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, BACC is one of the venues of the Bangkok Art Biennale 2026, so expect extra art during that period.

Dream World

Dream World is a theme park in Pathum Thani, about 20 km north of central Bangkok. The drive takes about 45–60 minutes. The park has Snow Town, an area with artificial snow, and rides such as the Sky Coaster and the Viking Ship.

In September 2025 the gate price was about 1,000 THB per person, rides included, for adults and for children 90 cm and taller. Children under 90 cm entered free, and tickets booked online through Klook cost about 950 THB. Prices may have changed since then, so check the current price and the opening hours on the Dream World website before you go.

By taxi, Grab or Bolt from central Bangkok, expect about 400–600 THB one way plus about 190 THB in expressway tolls. Bus 538 from Victory Monument costs less but takes about 90–120 minutes.

Safari World

Safari World is open Tuesday to Friday from 09:00 to 16:00 and on Saturday and Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00. No Monday hours are listed, so expect it to be closed on Monday. Tickets are sold on the Safari World ticket website. It is outside central Bangkok, so allow extra travel time each way.

MOCA Bangkok

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is at 499 Kamphaengphet 6 Road, Lat Yao, in the same Chatuchak district as the closed museum. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 and is closed on Monday. Adults pay about 400 THB and students with ID about 120 THB. Children under 13, people over 60 and people with disabilities enter free. The ticket does not include special exhibitions. MOCA suits families with older children who enjoy art. It is less suitable for toddlers.

Day Trips South of Bangkok

Two more family options lie south of the city in Samut Prakan, about 15 minutes apart:

  • Ancient City (Muang Boran): a large site of about 800 rai (about 128 hectares). It is open daily from 09:00 to 19:00, and ticket sales close at 18:00. The nearest BTS station is Kheha.
  • Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo: about 30–40 minutes south of central Bangkok, open again under new management, with crocodile shows. In November 2025 foreigners paid 400 THB; check the current price at the gate. Many enclosures are old.

Tips for a Family Day in Bangkok

  • Plan around Mondays. MOCA, BACC and Safari World are closed on Monday, so plan your family day for Tuesday to Sunday.
  • Go indoors at midday. Save aquariums and museums for the midday heat.
  • Carry water and snacks, and a spare set of clothes for small children.
  • Book online where it saves money. SEA LIFE Bangkok is up to 27% cheaper online than at the counter.
  • Allow travel time for places outside the centre. Dream World, Safari World, Ancient City and the Crocodile Farm are outside central Bangkok. By car, budget for expressway tolls as well.

Getting Around with Children

Public transport costs less than a car. BACC is next to BTS National Stadium, and Ancient City is near BTS Kheha. For places outside the centre, or when you travel with small children and bags, a private car is easier.

Smile Taxi Service fares are fixed per vehicle, not per person, one way, and include expressway tolls. A child seat costs +100 THB, on request; ask for it when booking. A sedan takes up to 3 passengers with 2 bags, an SUV up to 5 with 4 bags, and a van up to 7 with 5 bags. Airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting, counted from the actual landing time.

You pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip. If you can only pay by card, message the team for a PayPal payment link; a 5% fee is added. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. After that, a cancellation or change costs 25% (less than 24 h), 35% (less than 12 h) or 50% (less than 2 h) of the price, and a no-show 100%, also when you pay the driver in cash (details). An English-speaking driver can be requested when booking, subject to availability. All routes are on the fare list.
