Thailand is known for its heat, but from about November to February the north has a real cool season. Mountain mornings can be close to freezing, valleys fill with mist, and several of Thailand's biggest festivals take place. This guide covers where to find the cool weather, what to see, the key dates of the 2026–27 season, and what to pack.
The monthly temperature and rainfall averages in this article are 1991–2020 averages from Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) stations. They describe a typical year, not a forecast.
When is winter in Thailand?
The TMD calls it the cool season, or winter, and dates it from mid-October to mid-February, the season of the north-east monsoon. For 2026, the TMD expected the rains in upper Thailand to end around mid-October.
"Winter" in Thailand does not mean cold everywhere. In Bangkok, the average daily low in January is still 23.4 °C, and the average high is 32.7 °C. What changes most is the rain: December is Bangkok's driest month, with 11.6 mm.
The north feels very different. In Chiang Mai city, the averages for the cool season are:
| Month | Average daily high | Average daily low | Average rainfall |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 30.8 °C | 19.9 °C | 40.9 mm |
| December | 29.2 °C | 16.9 °C | 14.1 mm |
| January | 30.0 °C | 15.7 °C | 11.3 mm |
| February | 32.9 °C | 16.8 °C | 9.6 mm |
Days are still warm in the city, but nights and early mornings are cool. The lowest temperature on record in Chiang Mai city is 3.7 °C, in January.
Where to find cool weather in Thailand
The higher you go, the colder it gets:

| Phu Ruea | Loei | Highest point 1,365 m | Frost possible in cold snaps |
| Phu Kradueng | Loei | Plateau about 1,200–1,250 m | Closed from June to September |

Best cool-season experiences
Frost on Doi Inthanon
Doi Inthanon National Park is about 100 km from Chiang Mai city; the main entrance is about 70 km south-west of the city. On 27 November 2025, the park reported frost for the fourth morning in a row. That morning it was 11 °C at the park office (km 31 on the park road), 8 °C on the Kew Mae Pan nature trail and 2 °C at the summit, and the coldest point measured was −2.3 °C.
- Entry: 300 THB for a foreign adult and 150 THB for a child aged 3 to 14.
- Kew Mae Pan nature trail: open from 1 November, after its yearly closure from June to October. A local guide is required, at 220 THB per group of up to 10 people.
- Safety: on frosty mornings, the park warns that the summit road can be slippery.
The sea of mist at Phu Chi Fa
The "sea of mist" (ทะเลหมอก, thale mok) is a valley filled with low cloud, seen from above at sunrise. Phu Chi Fa, a forest park at 1,628 m in Chiang Rai province, is one of the best-known places to see it. The season runs from October to February, and the best months are December and January. Plan to be at the viewpoint before sunrise, and bring a warm layer for the wait.
Cool-season festivals and events, 2026–27
Loy Krathong and Yi Peng (November)
Loy Krathong falls on the full moon of the 12th lunar month; in 2026 that is Tuesday 24 November. In Chiang Mai, the Yi Peng and Loy Krathong events run from about 23 to 25 November 2026; sources differ by one day on the main night, so confirm the programme locally. The large lantern releases are ticketed events at licensed venues outside the city, so book a ticket in advance and plan your transport to the venue.
The royal cremation in Bangkok (December)
The royal cremation of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, who died on 24 October 2025, will take place on 16 December 2026 at Sanam Luang, next to the Grand Palace, as part of ceremonies from 15 to 19 December. Expect large crowds and road closures around Sanam Luang and the Grand Palace that week, and check before you plan a visit there. Visitors do not need to wear black, but neutral, modest clothes are respectful.
Chiang Mai Flower Festival and Chinese New Year (February)
The Chiang Mai Flower Festival is normally held from Friday to Sunday on the first weekend of February at Nong Buak Haad Park, but the dates can move: in 2026 it was held on 13–15 February because of the general election. For 2027 it is expected on 5–7 February, with the parade on Saturday 6 February, which is also Chinese New Year. These dates were not yet official in September 2026, so check them before you book.
In Bangkok, the official Chinese New Year celebration is held in Yaowarat, the city's Chinatown. In 2026 the official Yaowarat celebration was cancelled because of royal mourning, so check the 2027 programme closer to the date.
Beaches in the cool season
On the Andaman coast, December to March is the drier period: Phuket's driest month is February, with about 24 mm of rain. The Similan Islands National Park is open from 15 October to 15 May, and the 2026–27 season opens on 15 October 2026.
The Gulf side of the south is the opposite. On Koh Samui, October to December is the wettest time of the year, and the TMD expects rain on the Gulf side of the south to continue until December 2026. In late November 2025, floods in the south hit Songkhla province (Hat Yai) hardest. If you travel to Samui, Nakhon Si Thammarat or Hat Yai between October and December, keep some free days in your plans.
Camping on the mountains
Phu Kradueng National Park in Loei is one of Thailand's best-known places to camp in the cool season. Its highest point is 1,316 m, and the park is closed from June to September every year.
- The trail: the main trail climbs to the rim of the plateau and continues to the plateau office, 8.7 km in total. An averagely fit walker takes under 5 hours.
- Entry: 200 THB for a foreign adult and 100 THB for a child aged 3 to 14.
- Porters: 30 THB per kg if you do not want to carry your bag up the trail.
- Tents: tent hire costs from 150 THB (2 people) to 400 THB (4 people), plus 60 THB per person for bedding.
Nights on the plateau can be cold in December and January. Bring a warm sleeping bag or extra bedding, thermal layers, a hat and gloves, and a head torch.
Getting to the mountains
The best mountain views are at sunrise, and frost can make summit roads slippery, so a local driver who knows the roads is a comfortable choice. Fares are fixed, per vehicle (not per person) and one way, with expressway tolls included.
| Route | Sedan | SUV | Van |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suvarnabhumi Airport to Chiang Mai | 7,500 THB | 8,500 THB | 10,000 THB |
| Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai | 2,500 THB | 3,000 THB | 3,800 THB |
- Book a sedan from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Chiang Mai
- Book a sedan from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai (Phu Chi Fa is in Chiang Rai province)
For a full day in the mountains around Chiang Mai, the Chiang Mai + Doi Tour is a private tour of up to 10 hours: 3,300 THB (sedan), 3,500 THB (SUV), 4,000 THB (van) or 4,500 THB (VIP van). Message us to ask what the day can include, or see all tours and day trips. For Phu Kradueng or Phu Ruea in Loei there is no fixed fare: ask for a quote on WhatsApp or LINE.
A sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 2 bags, an SUV up to 5 passengers and 4 bags, and a van up to 7 passengers and 5 bags. The fare is the same for 1 passenger or a full car. You pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip; if you can only pay by card, message us for a PayPal payment link (a 5% fee is added). Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. After that, a cancellation or change costs 25% (less than 24 h), 35% (less than 12 h) or 50% (less than 2 h) of the price, and a no-show 100%, also when you pay the driver in cash (details). Not every driver speaks English, but you can request an English-speaking driver when you book, subject to availability. See all routes and prices, or read our guides on getting from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and from Bangkok to Chiang Rai.
What to pack
For the mountains in December and January:
- A warm jacket, long trousers and closed shoes
- A hat and gloves for sunrise viewpoints
- Layers you can take off, because middays are still warm
For festivals and cities:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- A light layer for cool evenings and air-conditioned malls, buses and trains
- Clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for the Grand Palace
If your trip continues into March or April, check the air quality before you plan outdoor days in the north. On 7 April 2026, Chiang Mai was ranked the world's most polluted city. The free Air4Thai and IQAir AirVisual apps show PM2.5 levels.
