Using Ride-Sharing Apps Abroad

Ride-hailing apps are one of the easiest ways for visitors to get around Thailand: you see the price before you book and do not need to explain the address in Thai. This guide covers which apps are legal in 2026, how to set them up and pay, where to meet your car at the airport, and when a metered taxi or a pre-booked transfer is the better choice.

Which ride-hailing apps are legal in Thailand

Thailand's Department of Land Transport (DLT) certifies ride-hailing platforms. In 2026, eight are certified: Grab, Bolt, inDrive, LINE MAN, Maxim, Lalamove, TADA and Fingogo. Certified platforms may use only drivers who hold a public-transport licence, and stricter enforcement starts on 1 October 2026.

Use a certified app, and keep a second one installed in case the first app finds no driver.

Grab

Grab offers private cars, metered taxis booked through the app, and GrabBike motorbike rides. You can pay in cash, by card or with an e-wallet. At Suvarnabhumi Airport, the airport itself describes Grab as a legally licensed service.

Bolt

Bolt takes cash, cards (with some limits) and some e-wallets, but cash is the norm. In a May 2026 comparison in Phuket, Bolt was about 20–30% cheaper than Grab: about ฿450 against about ฿600 for a ride from Patong to Bang Tao. But Bolt has fewer cars, so you may wait longer.

inDrive

inDrive works differently. You propose a price for the ride, and drivers either accept it or make a counter-offer. It suits travellers who are comfortable negotiating. Check its payment options in the app.

Setting up your apps before you fly

  • Install and register at home. Create your accounts while your home SIM card can still receive the verification message.
  • Add a card, but carry cash too. Keep Thai baht as a fallback in case the app refuses your foreign card.
  • Save your hotel address in Thai script with a map pin. In Thai addresses, "soi" is a side lane and "thanon" is a main road.
  • Arrange mobile data. The apps need data for maps and driver messages. If you book a Smile Taxi airport pickup, you can ask for a free 500 MB Thailand eSIM when you book.

Paying for your ride

App How the price is set Payment
Grab Price shown before you book Cash, card or e-wallet
Bolt Price shown before you book Mostly cash; card is limited
inDrive You propose a price; drivers accept or counter Check in the app

Carry small Thai banknotes for cash rides. Before a long ride, such as an airport trip, ask the driver in the app chat whether expressway tolls are included.

Booking your ride and finding the car

  1. Allow location access and enter your destination.
  2. Pick the vehicle type. A small car may not fit several suitcases.
  3. Check the price. App prices rise at busy times and in heavy rain, so waiting a few minutes or checking a second app may give you a lower price.
  4. Check your pickup pin. Move it to a hotel entrance or a main road, not deep inside a narrow soi.
  5. Book, then note the car model and plate number shown in the app.

Airport pickups

Grab has fixed pickup points at these airports:

  • Suvarnabhumi (BKK): Level 1, Gate 4, on the outer kerb. Grab picks up here 24 hours a day.
  • Don Mueang (DMK): Terminal 2, Level 1, Gate 14. International flights arrive at Terminal 1, so walk to Terminal 2 (the domestic terminal).
  • Phuket (HKT): near Exit 8 of the international terminal.

What a ride from Suvarnabhumi into Bangkok costs

Option Approximate price Notes
Grab car about ฿450–700 Price shown before booking; higher at busy times
Metered taxi about ฿400–650 Includes the ฿50 airport surcharge and tolls
Airport Rail Link ฿45 per person To Phaya Thai; runs 05:30–24:00
Smile Taxi sedan ฿600 per car, fixed Tolls included; 60 minutes of free waiting

All third-party prices in this article were checked in September 2026. They change often: treat them as approximate and confirm them in the app or with the operator.

The public taxi queue at Suvarnabhumi is on Level 1, Gates 4–7 (inner kerb), and runs 24 hours. Take a queue ticket at the kiosk and check that the meter is running. The meter starts at ฿35 (฿40 in larger three-row taxis). You pay the driver the ฿50 airport surcharge on top, you pay any expressway tolls in cash at the booth, and a fee for large bags may apply. After midnight the Airport Rail Link has stopped, so use the public taxi queue, Grab or a pre-booked transfer.

Apps or a metered taxi?

Apps are not always cheaper. Off-peak, a metered taxi is often cheaper than Grab, and Bangkok taxi meters have no night surcharge. The meter rises by distance (฿6.50 per km for the first 10 km) and adds ฿3 per minute when the taxi moves at 6 km/h or less, so a metered taxi costs more in a traffic jam.

An app is better when you cannot explain the address in Thai or want to know the price first. If a metered taxi or motorbike taxi overcharges you or refuses to take you, call the Department of Land Transport hotline on 1584 (24 hours) with the plate number, date, time and place.

Tips by place and situation

  • Motorbike rides: If you book a GrabBike, wear the helmet. Helmets are compulsory for passengers too, and since 1 June 2025 police enforce the rule with fines of up to ฿2,000.
  • Phuket: Bolt is often cheaper than Grab, but it has fewer cars. From the airport, a metered taxi to Patong costs about ฿600–700, and the driver adds a ฿100 airport surcharge.
  • Chiang Mai: Airport taxis charge a flat ฿150 to the city centre, so you know the price without an app.
  • Families: Metered taxis are exempt from the child-seat rule for children under 6 and do not supply child seats. Bring your own, or book a transfer with a child seat.

Staying safe

  • Check the plate and car model against the app before you get in.
  • Send your trip details and the plate number to a friend.
  • If you have a problem, call the Tourist Police on 1155 (24 hours). The "Thailand Tourist Police" app lets you contact them without a Thai SIM card.
  • Emergency numbers: police 191, ambulance 1669.

When a pre-booked transfer makes more sense

An app is ideal for short city rides. For an airport arrival with luggage, a family, or a long trip between cities, a pre-booked transfer gives you a fixed price and a driver who waits for you.

Smile Taxi Service fares are fixed, per vehicle (not per person), one way, with expressway tolls included and no meter:

In Bangkok, pickups or drop-offs west of the Chao Phraya River (the Thonburi side) cost ฿100–200 extra. A sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 2 bags, an SUV up to 5 passengers and 4 bags, and a van up to 7 passengers and 5 bags. Before the trip, the team sends you the driver's name, car and plate number. Airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting from the actual landing time. A name sign and a child seat cost ฿100 each, on request. You pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip; if you can only pay by card, message the team and they send a PayPal payment link with a 5% fee added. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. After that, a cancellation or change costs 25% (less than 24 h), 35% (less than 12 h) or 50% (less than 2 h) of the price, and a no-show 100%, also when you pay the driver in cash (details).
