Exploring Thailand's Museums and Cultural Centers

Thailand's museums tell the country's story in a way that temples alone cannot, from royal treasures and stone inscriptions to textiles and contemporary art. This guide covers museums and cultural centers in and around Bangkok, with opening days, hours and prices as of September 2026, plus notes on getting there, what to wear, and which days to avoid.

Quick Reference: Days, Hours and Prices

Check the closing days first: arriving on a closing day is the most common mistake.

Venue Open Hours Adult ticket
Bangkok National Museum Wednesday to Sunday 08:30 or 09:00 to 16:00 (sources differ) About 240 THB (foreigners)
Jim Thompson House Daily 10:00-17:00 About 250 THB
Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles Daily 09:00-16:30 About 150 THB, or free with the Grand Palace ticket
MOCA Bangkok Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00 About 400 THB
Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-20:00 Free
Erawan Museum Daily 09:00-18:00 Ask the museum
Ancient City (Muang Boran) Daily 09:00-19:00 Ask the museum

Prices and hours were checked in September 2026 and change often, so confirm them with each venue before you go. Public holidays can bring closures or crowds; those still ahead in 2026 include King Bhumibol Memorial Day on 13 October, Chulalongkorn Day on 23 October and Constitution Day on 10 December.

Top Museums in Bangkok

Bangkok National Museum

The Bangkok National Museum is a good first stop for Thai history. It is on Na Phra That Road in the Phra Nakhon district, inside the former Wang Na, or Front Palace. Tha Chang pier serves both the museum and the Grand Palace, so you can visit both on the same day.

The collections include the Ramkhamhaeng Inscription, the royal funeral chariots and many Buddha images.

Practical details:

  • Open Wednesday to Sunday; closed Monday and Tuesday.
  • Sources give the hours as 08:30-16:00 or 09:00-16:00 (last entry 15:30), so arrive before 15:30.
  • Foreigners pay 240 THB. Thai nationals pay 30 THB.
  • Getting there: take a river boat to Tha Chang pier, then walk about 900 m. MRT Sanam Chai on the Blue Line is another option.
  • Telephone: +66 2 224 1333.

Jim Thompson House

Jim Thompson House is a house museum in central Bangkok, and one of the easiest museums to reach by BTS Skytrain.

Practical details:

  • Open daily, 10:00-17:00. The last guided tour starts at 17:00.
  • You can enter the main house only on a guided tour. Tours run in Thai, English, French, Chinese and Japanese.
  • Adults pay 250 THB. Visitors aged 10 to 21 pay 150 THB with ID. Children under 10 enter free.
  • Address: 6 Soi Kasemsan 2, Rama 1 Road. Take the BTS to National Stadium and use Exit 1.
  • Telephone: +66 2 216 7368.

House rules: photography is allowed inside the main house, but flash, selfies, individual portraits and video are not. You take off your shoes inside the house. Bags larger than 20 cm go into lockers. Details are on the Jim Thompson House visitor page.

Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles

This museum is inside the Grand Palace, in the Ratsadakorn-bhibhathana Building.

Practical details:

  • Open daily, 09:00-16:30, with last admission at 15:30.
  • The 500 THB Grand Palace ticket for foreigners already includes it. Keep your palace ticket and show it at the museum desk.
  • A museum-only ticket costs 150 THB for adults, 80 THB for seniors aged 65 and over, and 50 THB for students and ages 12 to 18; under 12 is free.

The Grand Palace itself is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30, but tickets are sold only from 08:30 to 15:30. To see the palace, Wat Phra Kaew (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha) and the textile museum on one ticket, arrive soon after 08:30.

The palace dress code applies: cover your shoulders, upper arms and knees. Sleeveless or crop tops, shorts, three-quarter trousers, ripped jeans, leggings, short skirts, and tight or see-through clothing are not allowed. If you arrive in the wrong clothes, you can borrow a cover-up at the entrance against a refundable deposit of about 200 THB per item.

Art Museums and Cultural Centers

MOCA Bangkok (Museum of Contemporary Art)

MOCA is at 499 Kamphaengphet 6 Road, Lat Yao, Chatuchak, far from the old town, so plan it as a separate trip.

  • Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-18:00; closed Monday.
  • Adults pay 400 THB. Students with ID pay 120 THB. Children under 13, visitors over 60 and people with disabilities enter free.
  • The standard ticket does not include special exhibitions.
  • Telephone: +66 2 016 5666. Current prices are on the MOCA Bangkok admission page.

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC)

BACC is a free art and culture center at 939 Rama I Road in Pathumwan, next to BTS National Stadium. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-20:00, and closed on Monday. Telephone: +66 2 214 6630.

Bangkok Art Biennale 2026

The Bangkok Art Biennale 2026 runs from 29 October 2026 to 28 February 2027 under the theme "Angels and Mara". Its 10 venues include Museum Siam, Wat Arun, Wat Pho, One Bangkok, Wat Prayoon and BACC, so between those dates you may also find contemporary art on an ordinary temple visit. Details are on the Bangkok Art Biennale website.

Museums on the Edge of Bangkok

Two unusual museums are in Samut Prakan province, outside central Bangkok. Allow travel time each way, and budget for expressway tolls if you drive.

Erawan Museum

The Erawan Museum is known for its giant three-headed elephant. It is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00, and ticket sales close at 17:00. Take the BTS to Chang Erawan (E17) and use Exit 2. Telephone: +66 2 380 5244.

Ancient City (Muang Boran)

Ancient City is a museum park of about 800 rai (about 128 hectares) at 296/1 Moo 7 Sukhumvit Road, Bang Pu Mai. It is open daily from 09:00 to 19:00, and ticket sales close at 18:00. The nearest BTS station is Kheha. Telephone: +66 2 026 8800.

To see both in one day by car, a Smile Taxi Service Bangkok Tour gives you a private car and driver for a full day of up to 10 hours. The fixed price per vehicle is 2,700 THB for a sedan, 3,000 THB for an SUV, 3,700 THB for a van and 4,000 THB for a VIP van. Pickup in another province costs 500 THB more.

Museums Outside Bangkok

Ayutthaya, Sukhothai and Chiang Mai each have a national museum. We could not confirm their current hours and fees, so check them locally. Our guides explain how to reach each city: Bangkok to Ayutthaya, Bangkok to Sukhothai and Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

A Smile Taxi Service transfer from Bangkok to Ayutthaya costs 1,500 THB for a sedan, 1,700 THB for an SUV and 2,000 THB for a van, per vehicle and one way, with expressway tolls included. Book a sedan from Bangkok to Ayutthaya.

Cultural Shows

Siam Niramit Bangkok has closed. Older guides still list it, but the Bangkok venue on Ratchada closed permanently in September 2021. Only Siam Niramit Phuket operates.

In Bangkok, the Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre at 66 Charoen Krung Road stages a Khon show (the "Hanuman" set). Its office is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00, including holidays (telephone +66 2 225 8757-8 or +66 2 623 8148). Its website did not list show days or prices when we checked, so ask the theater directly.

Museum Visiting Tips

  • Plan museum days from Wednesday to Sunday. MOCA and BACC close on Monday, and the National Museum closes on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Dress for the strictest place of the day. Clothing that meets the Grand Palace rules also meets the rules at Wat Pho and Wat Arun.
  • Check the photo rules. Jim Thompson House limits photography (see above), and photography is not allowed inside the ordination hall of the Emerald Buddha at the Grand Palace.
  • Carry cash. Temple ticket counters and the Wat Arun ferry take cash, so keep small notes.
  • Ignore strangers who say a site is closed. People outside the Grand Palace sometimes say this to sell a tuk-tuk tour.

Suggested Museum Days

  • Old town (Wednesday to Sunday): Bangkok National Museum, then the Grand Palace and the textile museum on one ticket (tickets stop at 15:30).
  • Rama I Road (Tuesday to Sunday): Jim Thompson House, then BACC, which stays open until 20:00.
  • Samut Prakan: Erawan Museum and Ancient City, by BTS or on the Bangkok Tour.

If you are flying in, a transfer from Suvarnabhumi Airport to your Bangkok hotel costs 600 THB for a sedan, 800 THB for an SUV and 1,100 THB for a van, per vehicle and one way, with expressway tolls included. Book a sedan from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok. You pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. After that, a cancellation or change costs 25% (less than 24 h), 35% (less than 12 h) or 50% (less than 2 h) of the price, and a no-show 100%, also when you pay the driver in cash (details).
