Traditional markets show everyday Thai life more clearly than any mall. This guide covers the markets in and around Bangkok and in Chiang Mai that are worth your time, when to go, how to get there, and how to shop politely.

Discovering Thailand's Traditional Markets
Thai markets fall into four broad types.
- Fresh markets: fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, flowers and ready-to-eat food, mainly for local shoppers.
- Floating markets: vendors sell from boats or from stalls along a canal. Some still serve local people; others are now mainly for visitors.
- Weekend markets: large general markets with clothes, crafts, home goods and plants, open mainly on Saturday and Sunday.
- Night markets: evening markets that combine street food, clothing and souvenirs.
Floating Markets
Taling Chan Floating Market
Taling Chan is the floating market closest to central Bangkok. It sits on Khlong Chak Phra, in front of the Taling Chan district office. It is in Taling Chan district, not in Bangkok Noi district as some older guides say.
- Open: weekends only, about 08:30–16:00 (as of September 2026; published hours vary slightly, so confirm locally)
- Live Thai music: 11:00–14:00
- Getting there: by taxi or private car; the market is on the Thonburi side, west of the Chao Phraya River
Taling Chan suits visitors who want a floating market without a long drive.
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
Damnoen Saduak is a famous floating market in Ratchaburi province, about 100 km south-west of Bangkok. The market has three parts: Ton Khem (the largest), Hia Kui and Khun Phitak.
- Busiest time: 07:00–09:00, when the boats are most active
- Winds down: around noon
- Be prepared: it is widely described as touristy and overpriced
Leave Bangkok early so you arrive while the market is at its liveliest. Expect tourist prices, compare a few boats before you buy, and agree the price of any boat ride before you step in.
You can plan Damnoen Saduak and the Maeklong Railway Market (see below) as one day trip by private car. Amphawa is another well-known floating market. Check its current days and opening hours before you plan a visit.

Or Tor Kor Market (Bangkok)
Or Tor Kor Market is opposite Chatuchak Weekend Market, next to MRT Kamphaeng Phet station. It has been run by the Marketing Organization for Farmers since 1974 and is known for premium fruit, especially durian and mango. In 2017 CNN named it one of the world's top 10 fresh markets.
It is easy to combine with a visit to Chatuchak. Check its opening hours before you go.
Pak Khlong Talat, the Flower Market (Bangkok)
Pak Khlong Talat is Bangkok's flower market, on Chak Phet Road near Memorial Bridge. It is open 24 hours and is busiest before dawn, when the day's flowers arrive. The nearest station is MRT Sanam Chai.
In 2016 the street vendors were moved into the market buildings, so do not expect stalls on the pavement.
Warorot Market (Chiang Mai)
Warorot Market is on Wichayanon Road in the Chang Moi area of Chiang Mai. It is the place to find northern Thai food, such as sai ua (northern Thai sausage) and nam prik (chilli pastes), as well as clothes, textiles and embroidery.
Inside the market area, the Trok Lao Zhou alley sells Chinese and Hmong goods and is open daily 07:00–17:00. Check the hours of the rest of the market locally; a morning visit is the safest plan.
Weekend and Night Markets
Chatuchak Weekend Market (Bangkok)
Chatuchak is a very large weekend market. It has more than 15,000 stalls in 27 numbered sections and draws about 200,000 visitors each weekend.

- Stations: MRT Kamphaeng Phet (west end, by the plant sections), MRT Chatuchak Park (east end) and BTS Mo Chit.
- Paying: mostly cash; some modern stalls take QR payment.
- Finding your way: pick up a map at the market. Online section guides often disagree.
Arrive soon after 09:00, before the midday heat and the biggest crowds. When you find a stall you like, note its section number so you can find it again.
Chiang Mai Night Bazaar
The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is on Chang Khlan Road, between Tha Phae and Sridonchai roads, just east of the old-city moat. It is an evening market with souvenirs, clothes and crafts. Check its opening hours with your hotel.
Chiang Mai also has weekend walking-street markets. Ask locally about their current hours.
Night Markets in Bangkok
- Asiatique The Riverfront: a large riverside market and shopping area at 2194 Charoenkrung Road, open every day 11:00–24:00. A free shuttle boat runs from Sathorn Pier (BTS Saphan Taksin, Exit 2) from 16:00 to 23:30, about every 25–30 minutes.
- Patpong night market: on Patpong 1 Road between Silom and Surawong roads, a short walk from BTS Sala Daeng or MRT Si Lom. Check its hours locally.
Maeklong Railway Market
The Maeklong Railway Market in Samut Songkhram province is one of the most unusual markets in Thailand. The stalls sit right beside a working railway line, and vendors pull back their goods and awnings each time a train passes. Four trains a day run in each direction between Ban Laem and Maeklong on this line.
Confirm the day's train times at Maeklong station before you plan your visit around a train. Stand well back from the track when a train comes through, and do what the vendors do.

What to bring
- Cash in small notes (20, 50 and 100 THB). Markets work mostly in cash, although some stalls accept QR payment.
- Comfortable closed shoes, because fresh-market floors are often wet.
- Clothes that cover your shoulders and knees if you will also visit a temple that day.
Bargaining and etiquette
- Bargain only at markets and street stalls, never where prices are marked. Smile, stay calm, and do not walk away after you have agreed a price.
- Ask before you photograph a vendor, and do not block narrow walkways.
- Choose busy food stalls where the food is cooked in front of you.
- Buddha images are sacred. Do not buy a Buddha head as decoration, and ask the shop about an export licence before you buy an antique.
- For a problem with a shop, call the Tourist Police on 1155.

Getting to the Markets with Smile Taxi Service

Pickups or drop-offs on the Thonburi side of the river cost 100–200 THB extra.
