The most common planning mistake in Thailand is trying to do too much. Distances are long, Bangkok traffic is slow, and the heat makes long days tiring. This post shows how to plan realistic days, where time is usually lost, and which 2026 visa, holiday and transport rules matter.
Understanding Thai Time Culture
Thai people often describe a relaxed approach to life as sabai sabai, which roughly means "comfortable" or "at ease". Punctuality is respected, but flexibility is expected, and small delays are normal. If you build some spare time into each day, small delays do not cause stress.
Flights, trains, ferries and airport check-in deadlines are not flexible, however. Plan fixed departures carefully and keep the rest of the day loose.
Realistic Daily Scheduling
The Golden Rule
Plan no more than 2 or 3 major activities per day. This leaves time to travel between places, to rest during the hottest part of the day, and to stop at a market or a small temple you find on the way.
Leave one unplanned half-day for every few days of sightseeing.
A Sample Day
| Part of the day | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning | Temples, morning markets, outdoor sights | Cooler air and fewer people |
| Late morning | Museums, a tour, a main sight | You still have energy |
| Midday | Lunch and a rest in the hotel or a café | Avoid the strongest heat |
| Afternoon | Shopping, a massage, indoor visits | Air-conditioned places |
| Evening | Sunset, dinner, night markets | Cooler and lively |
Check opening hours before you go: Wat Pho in Bangkok, for example, opens daily from 08:00 to 19:30. The Grand Palace has a strict dress code, and visitors who do not follow it may be refused entry, so check what to wear before you go.
Planning Around the Visa Limit and Holidays
The New 30-Day Visa-Free Stay
From 15 September 2026, nationals of 60 countries and territories, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, can enter Thailand visa-free for tourism for up to 30 days. This replaced the 60-day visa exemption that had applied since 15 July 2024. For most Western passports, a trip of more than 30 days now needs a visa or an extension. Other nationalities have different rules, so check the entry conditions for your own passport before you book flights.
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card
Every non-Thai visitor must fill in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within the 3 days before arrival. It replaced the paper TM6 form and is not a visa. The official site, tdac.immigration.go.th, charges no fee; ignore sites that ask for money (official TDAC user guide). The form asks for your accommodation in Thailand, so have your first hotel's address ready, and save the confirmation on your phone.
Public Holidays and Busy Dates
Transport is busier and rooms cost more around long weekends. Public holidays in the rest of 2026 include 13 October (King Bhumibol Memorial Day), 23 October (Chulalongkorn Day), 7 December (King Bhumibol's Birthday, observed), 10 December (Constitution Day) and 31 December. Songkran, the Thai New Year, falls on 13–15 April in both 2026 and 2027. Loy Krathong is usually in November; check the event calendar of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) for the exact date. Book early for these dates and allow extra travel time.
Getting Around Bangkok Without Losing Time
Bangkok traffic is heavy at commuter times and hard to predict. Along the rail lines, the BTS Skytrain and the MRT are usually quicker. The 20 THB flat fare on Bangkok's rail lines is only for Thai nationals registered through the Tang Rat app. Foreign visitors pay distance fares: about 17–65 THB on the BTS and about 17–45 THB on the MRT Blue Line.
Save time at the ticket gates (payment rules as of September 2026):
- A contactless Visa or Mastercard works at the gates of the MRT Blue, Purple, Yellow and Pink lines, the Airport Rail Link and the SRT Red Line.
- The BTS does not accept bank cards. Buy a Rabbit card (200 THB: 100 THB deposit plus 100 THB credit) or single-journey tickets.
- The Airport Rail Link City Line runs from Suvarnabhumi to Phaya Thai (for the BTS) in about 27 minutes, for 45 THB, from 05:30 to 24:00, about every 10–13 minutes. The Express Line is suspended, so every train stops at all stations.
Prices for public transport were checked in September 2026; confirm them with the operator before you travel.
Airport Days: Arrival and Departure
Arriving. If you book a Smile Taxi Service airport pickup, the team sends the driver's name, car and plate number before the trip. A person checks your flight, and the pickup includes 60 minutes of free waiting, counted from the actual landing time. At Suvarnabhumi (BKK), the driver meets you on Level 4 (Departures), near Gate 4, and the car stops in the pickup lane. At Don Mueang (DMK), the meeting point is Level 3 (Departures); the exact door comes with the driver's details, because Don Mueang has two terminals. At either airport, once you have your bags, message the team on WhatsApp or LINE, and the car pulls up in about 5–10 minutes.
Departing. Suvarnabhumi Airport advises arriving at least 2 hours before a flight. Choose your pickup time with extra time for traffic.
Smile fares are fixed, per vehicle (not per person), one way, with expressway tolls included and no meter. Between Suvarnabhumi Airport and Bangkok, the fare is 600 THB by sedan (up to 3 passengers), 800 THB by SUV (up to 5) and 1100 THB by van (up to 7), in either direction:
Transfers and Day Trips
A door-to-door transfer saves the time spent reaching a bus station, waiting and changing vehicles. Public transport is cheaper and suits travellers with light luggage and flexible plans; a private car suits families, groups and tight schedules. Some fixed Smile fares, per vehicle and one way:
| Route | Sedan | SUV | Van |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok to Ayutthaya | 1500 THB | 1700 THB | 2000 THB |
| Ayutthaya to Bangkok | 1200 THB | 1500 THB | 2000 THB |
| Bangkok to Pattaya | 1500 THB | 1700 THB | 2000 THB |

Two extras help you use a travel day well:
- Extra stops on a transfer cost 250 THB per hour, so you can visit a sight on the way.
- A full-day private tour of up to 10 hours keeps the same car and driver all day. The Bangkok Tour costs 2700 THB by sedan, 3000 THB by SUV, 3700 THB by van and 4000 THB by VIP van. See Smile Taxi Service tours and day trips.
For a return trip on the same route, ask the team by message about the return-trip discount.
You pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip. If you can only pay by card, message the team for a PayPal payment link; a 5% fee is added. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. After that, a cancellation or change costs 25% (less than 24 h), 35% (less than 12 h) or 50% (less than 2 h) of the price, and a no-show 100%, also when you pay the driver in cash (details). An English-speaking driver can be requested when booking, subject to availability.

Sample Itineraries
This one-week example fits easily inside a 30-day visa-free stay:
- Days 1–3: Bangkok (temples, food, markets)
- Day 4: day trip to Ayutthaya
- Days 5–7: Chiang Mai (the Old City, temples, night markets)
For a longer trip, add beach days in the south, and spend the last night near your departure airport. A problem on the final day is harder to fix than a delay in the middle of a trip.
Common Time-Wasting Mistakes
- Over-scheduling. Trying to see everything leaves you tired and rushed.
- Ignoring traffic. A short distance in Bangkok can take a long time by road.
- Crossing the city several times a day. Group sights by area, and visit one area per half-day.
- No buffer before fixed departures. Leave spare time before flights, trains and ferries.
- Forgetting the paperwork. A missing TDAC, or a trip that is longer than your permitted stay, causes avoidable problems.
Preparing Your Phone
- Download offline maps of the cities you will visit.
- Keep your booking confirmations, hotel addresses and TDAC confirmation offline on your phone.
- Save the WhatsApp or LINE contact of your transfer company so that you can message them quickly on arrival.
- Save the Tourist Police hotline 1155 and the medical emergency number 1669 before you land.
