Travel Insurance Essentials

Travel insurance is one of the most important things to arrange before a trip to Thailand, because hospitals ask for a guarantee of payment before they treat you and private care can be expensive. This guide explains what a good policy should cover, when it may not pay, and how to use it. The facts were checked in September 2026 against official advice from the UK, Canadian and Thai governments.

Why Travel Insurance Matters in Thailand

Hospitals Ask for Payment First

According to the UK government, all hospitals in Thailand require a guarantee of payment before treating patients. The Government of Canada also says that hospitals often ask for payment in advance or proof of insurance before admission.

Private hospitals are of a high standard but can be expensive. Public hospitals do not always meet UK standards, especially outside Bangkok. The Government of Canada says that healthcare is excellent in major cities but varies in rural areas. Without insurance, you pay the whole bill yourself, possibly before treatment starts. With insurance, the hospital can ask your insurer for a guarantee of payment.

Risks Travellers Face

Most trips go smoothly, but official travel advice names these risks:

  • Road accidents. The World Health Organization ranks Thailand among the world's deadliest countries for motorcycle deaths.
  • Illness. The UK government lists dengue, malaria, Zika and rabies as health risks.
  • Contaminated drinks. Travellers have died after drinking alcohol contaminated with methanol.
  • Crime. Drink spiking followed by robbery or assault has been reported, and assaults are most common at full moon parties and near bars.

Types of Cover to Look For

The UK government advises travellers to get insurance that covers the whole itinerary, all planned activities and emergency costs. In practice, a policy has these parts.

Emergency Medical Treatment

This is the most important part. Check that it covers hospital treatment, doctor visits, prescribed medicines and ambulance transport, with a high limit, because private hospital bills grow quickly. The policy should give you a 24-hour assistance number with English-speaking staff.

Medical Evacuation

Evacuation cover pays to move you to a better-equipped hospital or back to your home country if the care you need is not available nearby. It matters most on islands and in rural areas.

Trip Cancellation and Belongings

Cancellation cover refunds prepaid costs if you must cancel your trip or end it early for a reason the policy accepts, such as illness or a family emergency. Belongings cover pays for lost or stolen luggage and valuables, up to a limit for each item, so check that limit if you carry an expensive camera or laptop.

Activities

Policies differ on activities such as diving, trekking or riding a motorbike: some exclude them, and some cover them only for an extra charge. List everything you plan to do and check that the policy names each activity.

Motorbikes and Scooters

Many visitors rent a motorbike or scooter in Thailand. According to the UK government, riding without a valid licence can make your travel insurance invalid.

To ride legally and keep your cover:

  1. Hold a valid motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit.
  2. Wear a helmet, and make sure your passenger wears one. Since 1 June 2025, police enforce the helmet law with fines of up to 2,000 THB, doubled to 4,000 THB when neither the rider nor the passenger wears one.
  3. Do not drink and ride. Police strictly enforce the drink-driving laws, especially at New Year and Songkran.
  4. Rent only a registered motorcycle. Unregistered motorcycles cannot be used legally.
  5. Check that your policy names motorbike riding as a covered activity.

Never leave your passport with a rental business as a deposit. Some motorbike and jet-ski rental firms keep passports and demand money for damage they say you caused.

Getting Around Without Riding

For longer journeys, a private transfer is one alternative. Smile Taxi Service fares are fixed, per vehicle (not per person), one way, with expressway tolls included and no meter. For example, Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok costs 600 THB by sedan (up to 3 passengers), 800 THB by SUV (up to 5) and 1100 THB by van (up to 7):

You pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end of the trip; if you can only pay by card, message the team for a PayPal payment link (a 5% fee is added). Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. After that, a cancellation or change costs 25% (less than 24 h), 35% (less than 12 h) or 50% (less than 2 h) of the price, and a no-show 100%, also when you pay the driver in cash (details). See all routes and fares.

When a Policy May Not Pay

  • Riding without a valid licence. See the motorbike section above.
  • Travelling against your government's advice. Insurance can be invalid in that case. The UK government, in advice updated on 18 September 2026, advises against travel within 20 km of the land border with Cambodia, and against all but essential travel to Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces and four districts of Songkhla province. Check your own government's advice before you book; British travellers can read the UK advice on warnings and insurance.
  • Dates outside the policy. Make sure your cover runs for every day you will be in Thailand. From 15 September 2026, nationals of 60 countries, including the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and most EU countries, can stay up to 30 days without a visa (the limit was 60 days before that date).

Choosing a Policy

Buy the policy before you leave home. Compare these points, not only the price:

What to compare What to check
Medical limit High enough for private hospitals
Evacuation Transfer to another hospital or back home
Activities Every planned activity is named
Motorbikes Whether riding is covered, and which licence is needed
Existing conditions Whether they are covered once you declare them
Excess What you pay yourself on each claim
Assistance line 24 hours, with English-speaking staff

Also ask the insurer whether it can send a guarantee of payment directly to hospitals in Thailand, and what the claim deadline is.

Using Your Insurance in Thailand

Before You Need It

Save your insurer's 24-hour number and your policy number on your phone, keep a printed copy in your bag, and give a copy to your family.

At the Hospital

Give the hospital your insurer's 24-hour number and your policy number as soon as you arrive, so that the insurer can provide the guarantee of payment. In an emergency, call 1669 for an ambulance first, then call the insurer or ask someone with you to call it. Private international hospitals in Bangkok include:

Hospital Address Phone
Bumrungrad International Hospital 33 Sukhumvit Soi 3 (Soi Nana Nua), Wattana +66 2 066 8888 (24 hours), or 1378 from a Thai phone
BNH Hospital 9/1 Convent Road, Silom +66 2 022 0700
Samitivej Hospital Sukhumvit Soi 49 +66 2 022 2222 (main line)

Outside Bangkok, ask your insurer which hospital to use.

If You Pay Yourself

Keep these documents so that you can claim the money back: original receipts and itemised bills, the medical report (in English if possible), pharmacy receipts and prescriptions, and the doctors' names and treatment dates.

After a Theft or a Scam

Report it to the Tourist Police on 1155 (24 hours, English-speaking operators) and ask for a police report for your insurer. For tourist fraud, you can also contact the Tourist Assistance Center at Suvarnabhumi Airport on 0 2134 4077 (24 hours).

Making a Claim

Report the problem to your insurer as soon as possible and check the claim deadline in your policy. These documents are usually needed:

Type of claim Documents
Medical Receipts, medical report, prescriptions
Theft Police report, receipts or photos of the items
Trip cancellation Bookings, proof of cancellation and of the reason
Lost luggage Airline report, baggage tag, list of items

Keep copies of everything you send.

Emergency Numbers

Save these before you land, together with your insurer's number and your embassy's number from its official website:

Service Number
Police and general emergency 191
Ambulance 1669
Fire 199
Tourist Police (24 hours, English) 1155

The "Thailand Tourist Police" app works without a Thai SIM card and sends alerts about safety concerns nearby.

Useful Thai Words

You can show the Thai text on your phone at a hospital or a police station.

English Thai Say it as
I have travel insurance ฉันมีประกันการเดินทาง chan mee prakan kan doen thang
A receipt, please ขอใบเสร็จด้วย kho bai set duay
Medical certificate ใบรับรองแพทย์ bai rap rong phaet
Police report ใบแจ้งความ bai jaeng khwam
Hospital โรงพยาบาล rong phayaban

FAQ

Will my travel insurance cover a scooter accident in Thailand? Not if you ride without a valid licence. You also need an International Driving Permit and a helmet, and the policy must name motorbike riding.

Do hospitals in Thailand treat you before you pay? Hospitals require a guarantee of payment or proof of insurance before treatment, so give them your insurer's details immediately.

Does travel insurance cover trips near the Cambodian border? It may not. Insurance can be invalid if you travel against your government's advice, and the UK advises against travel within 20 km of the land border with Cambodia.

What should I do if my bag or phone is stolen? Call the Tourist Police on 1155 and ask for a police report, which your insurer needs for a claim.

To travel from the airport or between cities without riding yourself, use the Smile Taxi Service booking page or message the team on WhatsApp or LINE.
